MIAMI, Florida, June 26, 2009.- Olympic gold
medalists Brazil scored an easy victory over
Canada in straight sets by score of 25-11,
25-12, 25-13 in the second match of Pool B of
the Eight Women’s Pan American Cup played at the
Florida International University’s U.S. Century
Bank Arena.
Mari Steinbrecher topped the winners with 12
points, including three aces and one block, and
Welissa Gonzalez contributed 10 points, all by
kills. Brittney Page was the best Canadian with
nine tallies.
The Brazilians held an advantage of 8-1 in
blocks and the gap in aces was 7-1 in favor of
the South Americans.
“The Brazilian made very few errors and we
failed in many easy plays,” said Arnd Ludwig,
the Canadian coach. “They are the Olympic
champions, but I think we paid too much respect
to them.”
“Our serves were the key today and the blocking
allowed to close the defense and also to prepare
our counter-attacks,” said Roberto Guimaraes,
the Brazilian coach. “Everything went well for
us.” |
